Mother Temple (Besakih)
High on the slopes of Mount Agung is Bali's Mother Temple Puri Besakih, The temple is believed to have been established in the fourteenth century. The temple is actually a complex made up of twenty-two temples that sit on parallel ridges. It has stepped terraces and flights of stairs which ascend to a number of courtyards and brick gateways that lead up to the main spire Meru structure, which is called Pura Penataran Agung. We will arrange a guide to walk you through the temple complex and explain the different parts of the temple and their relevance to the Balinese Hindu.
Kings Palace
The Puri Agung Karangasem Palace is located in the city of Amlapura, 40 minutes drive from Tulamben. It was the residence of the King of Karangasem. This is one of three palaces built here, the others being Puri Agung, built by the last King of Karangasem, and Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut, built around 1900.
Amlapura Markets
Also located in the city of Amlapura, each day there is a large traditional market where locals come to buy their foods, offerings, clothes, baskets and lots of items of interest to overseas visitors. A walk through the market is a cultural experience not to be missed.
Tirtagangga
The Royal Water Gardens at Tirtagangga, a 30 minute drive from Tulamben, is a great place for a walk around a beautiful garden and pool complex, with many statues places around the three acres of grounds. There are often Hindu ceremonies and Balinese Weddings carried-out inside the grounds, as the water eminating from a spring here is regarded as holy. The Royal Water Gardens were built in 1946 by the last king of Karangasem Anak Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem, who died in 1966. His family still own and run the Gardens, which were recently selected as one of the 40 most beguiling gardens of Asia featured in a new illustrated book, Paradise Found: Journeys Through Noble Gardens of Asia.
Amed Sea-Salt Village
Just 25 minutes from Tulamben, the coastal village of Amed, is where the local villagers extract salt from sea water, by evaporation and filtering,using natural materials. Amed Sea Salt is highly sought after as a gourmet salt, by the World's famous chef's. You can buy a small souvenir basket to take home for around a dollar! There are also great places to have lunch, go for a dive or snorkel along this coast.
Ubud
Come and experience the centre of Art & Culture in Bali. The town of Ubud lies in the mountains on the way from Tulamben back to the Airport, so you can visit this popular spot on your day of departure. In Ubud you can visit Art Galleries, Traditional Balinese Dance Performances, The Monkey Forest, go White Water Rafting or just sit back and enjoy the Mountain Scenery.
Waterfalls
There are two waterfalls worth visiting while you are in Tulamben:
Git-Git waterfall is located in the hills south of Singaraja, around 300 meters above sea level. This is a very pretty waterfall best visited on the way to Lovina or Pemuteran as it is around 2 hours drive from Tulamben.
At Les Village, just 40 minutes west of Tulamben is another waterfall. This is a very quiet area, with a shaded walk trail taking you to the base of a high waterfall in a large valley. Stand under the cooling water after a walk through the trail. Ask one of the locals to pick you a young coconut from the trees, a delicious thirst quencher.
White Water Rafting
What a great way to finish your dive trip to Tulamben. On the way back to the Airport, we can stop in the hills near Ubud, where you will be dropped in a steep river valley and hop onboard a rubber raft and then paddle down the river through rocky gullies, over small waterfalls and through lush green jungle. We'll be waiting for you at the end of your adventure to take you on to your hotel or the Airport.
